In a shocking event in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, an elderly Dalit man was reportedly coerced into licking urine. According to police reports, the incident occurred on Diwali near a temple in the outskirts of the city, where the man was accused of urinating.
As per information from a news agency, the suspect has been apprehended, while the victim's family claims it was an unfortunate accident. Ram Pal Rawat, a 60-year-old resident of Kakori, informed the authorities that he was drinking water near the Sheetala Mata temple around 7 PM when he was accused of urinating by a man named Swami Kant.
The police report indicates that the incident took place on Monday evening. In his complaint, Ram Pal Rawat stated that he was at the temple when Swami Kant, also known as Pammu, confronted him, alleging that he had urinated. Ram Pal insisted that he had not urinated, explaining that water had spilled instead. However, Kant persisted, using derogatory terms and threatening him, ultimately forcing him to lick the ground.
Mukesh Kumar, Ram Pal's grandson, expressed concern for his grandfather's health, stating that he was having difficulty breathing and might not survive without medication.
Details of the Incident
Mukesh recounted that his grandfather began coughing and accidentally urinated during the incident. Following this, Pammu approached and hurled casteist slurs at Ram Pal. Mukesh noted that his grandfather was frightened and complied when ordered to lick the urine. Afterward, the accused demanded that Ram Pal clean the area, which he did using water from a nearby pond.
Mukesh revealed that his grandfather did not inform the family about the incident until the following day, after which they filed a complaint against Pammu. He also mentioned that the main temple was located at least 40 meters away from where the incident occurred.
Charges have been filed against Swami Kant under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 115(2) (deliberate injury), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace), as well as relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Political Reactions
When questioned about whether the Dalit man was indeed forced to lick urine, police stated that it remains under investigation. The victim claims one thing, while the accused asserts that he was only forced to touch it. Following the incident, political uproar ensued, with opposition parties targeting the ruling party.
Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, posted on social media, stating that a mistake does not warrant such a humiliating and inhumane punishment. The Congress party also reacted, condemning the actions of a worker from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) who allegedly forced the elderly Dalit man to lick urine after he accidentally urinated due to illness. They described the incident as a stain on humanity and called for severe punishment for the perpetrators, highlighting it as a reflection of the anti-Dalit mindset prevalent in the ruling party.
However, police clarified that the accused has no ties to the RSS.
